Was the character of Roland in Stephen King's Dark Tower Series based off of Clint Eastwood characters?
There are several parts of the Dark Tower series that remind me of various Clint Eastwood films. For example, in The Gunslinger, Roland enters the old West-like town of Tull as a mysterious lone gunman, attracting women and frightening men - and he leaves with a climactic shootout. This part of the book reminds me of High Plains Drifter completely. I can’t imagine that movies like the Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Fistful of Dollars didn’t have something to do with King’s creation of Roland. What do you think? Has anybody else drawn that parallel between those two?
King drew on a lot of sources for the Dark Tower series, and I’m sure the iconic Man With No Name was one of them.
The idea of the series itself stems from a medieval legend about a young knight named Roland, or Rowland, on a quest to save his sister, who has been abducted by the king of Elfland and is kept a prisoner in the Dark Tower.
The legend is as much about Roland’s journey as it is about the rescue. The poet Robert Browning wrote a longish version of the legend in the 1860’s, which also provided King with several of the more nightmarish aspects of his own version.
Despite its sources, King created a landscape and characters all his own for his take on the quest saga—Roland’s history, ultimate aims and character are in many ways vastly different from the Eastwood persona—but his use of the gunslinger image gives the readers a great handle on visualizing Roland and his actions.

The Gunslinger is claimed by King to be based on the Dollars trilogy by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood.
