What does it take to become an actress in the Philippines?
Hi there everyone! I am a 20 y.o. girl from California. I am half filipino and half irish. Although I look more white than Filipino, I am fluent in Tagalog and am very familiar with Filipino culture. Ever since I could remember, family members, friends and random strangers have been telling me that I should go to the Philippines to become an actress. They would tell me that "magiging sikat na sikat ako doon" I never really gave it much thought because I was a very shy child, but I have been thinking about it a lot lately.
I’m not trying to be boastful at all, but I would say that I’m pretty. Not the most beautiful, but I definitely am not ugly. So, what I’m trying to ask is…what does it take to become an actress in the Philippines? How would I begin the process of trying to make it in the business?
i forgot to add…i only have a tiny amount of acting experience . i helped a friend in film school out by being in his short film. i’m no meryl streep, but from what i’ve seen on TFC, real acting ability is hard to find…but my friends and family are always telling me that i’m maarte all the time, so who knows, maybe i’m a natural
also, i’m still in university now, so i wouldn’t be doing this until another year or so. thanks to everyone that has answered so far.
What does it take to become an actress in the Philippines?
Judging from the new crop of aspiring actors/actress in the Philippines, not much apparently. Just as long as you find a good manager with the right connections, you’ll be on your way. Breaking into TV is easier to start with before trying movies, unless you know the producer or director. Just visit the major networks and audition. Who knows, you might get lucky. You could always try commercial modeling, a lot of models made the transition from modeling to acting.

Well, ever heard of "Pinoy Big Brothers"? All you got to do is to apply to be allowed to join in that "Bahay ni Kuya". It’s the way of apply to be an actress/actor here nowadays. Once you arrive here, go directly to ABS-CBN and I am sure you can make it. Or upon your arrival, watch the daily show PBB so as to orient yourself on what you’ll do once you’re accepted to become a participant.
GOD BLESS YOUR TRIP AND GOOD LUCK

One small oversight………..Can you actually ACT…or do you just look pretty?

Try enrolling in acting workshops by ABS-CBN Star Magic or GMA Artist Center. Those are the stepping stones of famous artists nowadays. But they take a long way before that. First projects would be commercials and cameo roles, and if you have the right looks, talent, and attitude… managers would notice you.
And by the way, today, it has been a trend that TV Networks DO NOT LOOK AT HOW GOOD YOU ARE IN ACTING… They say "basta maganda okay na, mawoworkshop naman yan eh"
Or, may I just ask, what is your definition of beautiful by the way?

it’s very true that there are alot of pretty faces on TFC with no real talent. so if you don’t have any talent for acting; please, don’t be another pretty face on tv. anyway, since i don’t know you, who am I to judge?
hone your acting skills and get more experience
try for a go-see in modeling agencies in the philippines, aim for commercial modeling to become a household name
join acting workshops in big tv networks like ABS-CBN or GMA
audition for reality tv shows, lots of them started this way
expand your social circle up to the people working in these industries
btw, being "maarte" has nothing to do with acting. being "maarte" could mean anything like being squeamish, histrionic, uptight, picky, p* ssy etc

There has been many similar questions asked here on Y!AP. The others are right. You can join talent searches or you can look for a ‘legitimate’ talent manager to help you out. Having good looks is definitely a factor in becoming a star. But as you can see from TFC, we have so many young stars. Most of them are products of singing contents, star search, and reality shows. They were given TV exposures but it seems the 2 giant networks, can’t give all of them the big break. So some of them just vanish from the industry after 2-3 years with no real accomplishments. The likes of Judy Ann Santos and Claudine Barreto lasted in the business because they have the talent and the following/supporters (what we call the "masa").
Just a friendly advise, since you are in a university, you should not only delay your plans until next year but until you have earned your college degree. A diploma is a good investment in life.
Stars come and go, but having a college education can help you build a lifetime career, until such time you would like to retire. You can still try your luck in show business after graduation- at least you have a fall back career if things don’t turn up well. Think about it carefully.
