The Snows of Kilimanjaro
The Snows of Kilimanjaro (1952)

IMDB rating: 6.30

Plot: As writer Harry Street (Gregory Peck) lays gravely wounded from an African hunting accident he feverishly reflects on what he perceives as his failures at love and writing. Through his delirium he recalls his one true love Cynthia Green (Ava Gardner) who he lost by his obsession for roaming the world in search of stories for his novels. Though she is dead Cynthia continues to haunt Street’s thoughts. In spite of one successful novel after another, Street feels he has compromised his talent to ensure the success of his books, making him a failure in his eyes. His neglected wife Helen (Susan Hayward) tends to his wounds, listens to his ranting, endures his talk of lost loves, and tries to restore in him the will to fight his illness until help arrives. Her devotion to him makes him finally realize that he is not a failure. With his realization of a chance for love and happiness with Helen, he regains his will to live.

do you think hemingways snows of kilimanjaro could be a pun for kill a man -jaro?

Nah. The only reason I don’t think so is because the place actually exists. If it was a fictional place, then I might question the origins of Hemingway’s name choice.

No, I think it’s about the thoughts of a writer dying in Africa, near Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Plot: When art student Ben Willis is dumped by his girlfriend Suzy, he develops insomnia. To pass the long hours of the night, he starts working the late night shift at the local supermarket. What are the normal charges for Cashback in a Supermarket ?

All the major supermarkets in the UK do not charge for cashback.

Some smaller stores (and this might include independent supermarkets too) make a charge, usually under ?1, for this service. This is perfectly legitimate - it is up to you whether you want the service enough to pay for it.

What is my skin colour/tone/season. What hair colour would look good on me.?
I have been trying to figure out what type of skin tone I am. They say to look at the veins on your wrists, mine are blue… but I am also tanned, so on my hands they are greenish-blue, but my hands are darker than my face……. so I don’t know how to tell. I tried looking at myself in the mirror, but I can’t really figure it out. I am pasting a link with three pictures of me in different light and setting. From left to right, Inside home near a lamp, then outside natural light. the last is in a shady area with a bit of overcast that day. Please help me! I am trying to figure out what colour to dye my hair and I want to find out what skin tone I am. I also want to know if I am a spring, winter.. etc. So I can start wearing colours that appeal to my skin tone. THANK YOU!

Roxanne
Roxanne (1987)

IMDB rating: 6.60

Plot: This is a remake of Cyrano de Bergerac, one of the most celebrated plays of the French theater, written by Edmond Rostand. Instead of being set in 17th century France, “Cyrano” has been changed to “Charlie”, a fire chief in a small town in Washington. Roxanne, played by the beautiful Darryl Hanna, rents a house for the summer to look at comets and Charlie quickly falls for her. Charlie is intelligent, funny, and sensitive, but all his fine qualities are unfortunately overshadowed by his very large nose (”Excuse me, it that your nose or did a bus park on your face?”). Charlie’s friend, Chris, on the other hand, is quite attractive, but superficial and awkward with words, especially around women (he has a tendency to throw up a lot). Both men are enthralled with Roxanne, but she, in a shallow but predictable move, shows interest in the handsome Chris. Chris is tongue-tied around her — everything that comes out of his mouth is either vulgar or indecipherable. So he asks Charlie for help. Charlie, inspired, writes 3 love letters a day to Roxanne, unbeknownst to Chris. Charlie’s eloquent letters work, because Roxanne falls in love with Chris. But Chris can’t meet Roxanne’s expectations in person and he soon runs off with a waitress who is “pretty cute, too”.

Horror Films today SUCKS big time! Anyone else agrees?
I Love all the horror movies back then, especially all the ones that came out before I was born were AMAZING. My favorite is Pet Cemetary, Rosemary’s Baby, Carrie, Sleepwalkers and Fright Night. Some were kind cheesy, but nonetheless good. Horror films today like Prom Night, When a Stranger Calls remake, Shutters and Asylum all sucks so bad. They spend so much time doing special effects that they dont care about the storyline anymore. Or maybe they do but chose sucky ones I dont know.

I hate the horror films today because it doesn’t have that creepy vibe that old horror film used to have, today everything is focused on special effects that are not even scary .
thanks everyone for answering. all great answers. =)

Absolutely. Horror films these days are OH SO overdone. Too much blood and gore. And I can’t even believe that I’m going to go see a harmless slasher flick with my mom or anything without it turning uncomfortable, because of the blatant sex that they have to add. Sure, sometimes it’s okay, but when it’s all the time and completely unnecessary? The problem is, that directors are trying WAYYY too hard to make their films scary, and they end up making it cheesier than Kraft. I can name so many terrible horror movies that were recently made. Another problem the film industry seems to have with making horror movies (or basically any movie in general) is that they don’t know when to stop. Their constant hunger for more money causes them to ruin perfectly good movies, and turn them into over-franchised cliches. Take SAW for instance. The first one was fantastic, and did well, so I understand that they would want to make a second one. Fine. That one wasn’t so bad either. Cut to the third one. Then the 4th, 5th etc. and so forth. Did it really need that many sequels? I understand it was trying to mimic the classic tradition of certain horror films having 7 sequels, but after number 4 doesn’t it all seem a bit repetitive? And Final Destination? I think the first one was so good, but after that, they all got soooo crappy! And then, remaking it, not 5 years after it originally came out? Give me a break. Then they try to overdo it with CGi and all that. Don’t get me started with House on Haunted Hill. That spirit thing? Amazingly cheesy.
I absolutely agree with you, they don’t seem to care about storylines much anymore. It’s just cut, slash, blood spatter and more blood spatter.
I am proud to say that my favourite movie is Halloween, because the premise is simple, and it’s all in all a fantastic movie. Some of my other favourites are the first Nightmare on Elm Street, ofcourse Rosemary’s Baby and the ORIGINAL Vincent Price Films (preferably House on Haunted Hill and The Last Man On Earth) and who could ever say no to George A. Romero’s legendary Night of the Living Dead? No one, that’s who. But I could certainly pass a viewing of Orphan, that’s for sure.
Old horror movies make you think, have characters who develop, and an interesting storyline. Horror films these days come no where near that!
I am so completely happy that there are at least a few sane people out there who agree with me. The people I know who actually prefer the new to the old, I try not to go Mike Meyers on. But definitely no promises!

I hope you agree with my point of view…my particularly longggg point of view, lol.

Mrs.Cullen | Jan 07, 2010

Very nice examples. loved them all. The only thing scary about today’s movies is that they can edit everything, so sometimes to things the computers make the character do(such as the grudge, the ring, etc) and the way the make the mouths super wide, they suck. I don’t jump neither as much as i do when i watch classics( i think the best horrors are the ones from the seventies). more so with the new ones i’m just like ( wow that’s F’d up!) so i agree with you completley.

Even the remakes of the classics suck.
Ashlea | Jan 07, 2010

I would tend to agree. I would even go one step further and say that your statement still works if you remove the word "Horror" for most of the crap that’s out there these days. The reason you like those horror movies you mentioned is that there was a strong plot in each. The story is what is most important, whether in a horror film, a comedy, action pic, or drama. If the emphasis is on what they can do with a computer in post production, the film suffers. Not to say that effects are a bad thing, but they are to serve the story, not the other way around.
