This experiment in heroin treatment comes after a six month study in pockets of London. Because crime rates fell in them six months of giving scag’s their fix in a needle, the powers that be have deemed it the right method of treatment.
But if you want someone to give up a habit, isn’t giving them their habit fuel preventing them from doing just that. Ok so they don’t have to shoplift to get their fix money, cause it’s being paid for by the taxman, but they aren’t getting off the substance either, so when the money runs out or another Government think it’s a waste of money, then these addicts, who can have longevity on the substance will go back to their thieving ways.
Also isn’t heroin a class A drug and therefore illegal to be given out by anyone or are their rules for one and rules for another.
The money that is being used to fund this hair brain scheme also means many truly ill people are being denied treatment like E.G Herceptin for breast cancer.
Beccy (Ali never gets a chance!) - If you think it’s a great idea, why don’t you apply for the job, cause the Government also want the doctors and nurses of these clinics to inject the heroin for the addicts, putting all the pressure on them, what if one dies, do they become responsible for their death?

Why not, they bought a yacht for the NEET’s to play with.

yes the the nhs should pay
if it prevents bag snatches , shoplifting burglary it would benefit the community , cut down on police visits casualties in hospital
it has been tried and tested in other countries and works
it would save money and victims in the long term , this should of happened years ago
kerryanne1963 | Sep 15, 2009
yes i totally agree with it and then we can give them 20 cigarettes and a bottle of vodka NOT
this goverment is utter rubbish that will give any idiot who doesnt pay tax what they want
Robert | Sep 15, 2009
Maybe understandable if they were using the heroin to ‘ween’ them off it. But from the news report I saw about it theyre not. Just gas them like rats is what I say.

A sure fire way to cut crime and should have been implemented years ago.
simm101 | Sep 15, 2009
I think they should. Lots of money is probably wasted on all the crime which surrounds it.
I’m reading a book by Ben Elton which is pretty much about the same thing, it makes sense.
Laura | Sep 15, 2009
Yes it should, cut down on crime less police man hours also, so it is swings and round abouts.
ROBERT M | Sep 15, 2009
I saw a report about it on the news earlier…and it actually seems to be a very good idea.
The ‘war against drugs’ will never be won,but at least this way,the hopelessly addicted are being given a safer, more controlled environment in which to feed their habit.
It also puts drug dealers out of a job…a few,at least.
Edit: Cockney Al:You make it sound like the nurses are expected to cook up in a grimy flat and inject them with street heroin…I’m sure anaesthetists and nurses wouldn’t have their collars felt by the polis for administering morphine, which is the same generic drug.
If it were my job,I’d do it…if I wasn’t prepared to do it..I’d get another job, rather than bleat on about how i disliked my work. After all, those vehemently opposed to this scheme, shouldn’t be working with these people,no?

The UK had one of the most effective drug treatment systems in the world until they caved to U.S. pressure and began treating it as a criminal rather a medical problem. Obviously enabling the problem by simply supplying addicts is not a solution, not even close, the only real solution is education and prevention plus counseling and treatment with the goal of allowing addicts to re-integrate into society as productive members.

i thought it was a crazy idea too…but my 75 yr old dad has been attacked twice by heroin addicts looking for money for a fix…(they got caught…6yrs in nick)
so if heroin was available to these pond life scum bag junkies…the cost to us, the public, would be minimal compared to the misery they cause us by muggings, beatings, robberies, car thefts etc….
i know it sounds bloody nuts….but perhaps it is a way to benefit us for once…& maybe we should give it a try - let’s face it…they will die pretty soon from their habit anyway….but along the way - they might get cleaned up!

Hmm, on paper it sounds like a brilliant idea, and I’m sure it works really well in countries that don’t have the same health fund issues like us. I just can’t see this happening over here. In my department (A&E) we are not even provided with pillows, something which greatly embarrasses me when I have to apologetically roll up a blanket behind someones head who has to spend the night on a hard trolley. Our drip stands are from the 1950s, and I think we have just have one rocking around somewhere. Dear NHS, please provide your hospital’s with very basic equipment before you go and spend your money on programmes like this.

I have worked with drug addicts and i think this is a brilliant idea
heroin provided by the government will stop a lot of pimps and dealers getting rich from other peoples misery , it would also be very cheap for the NHS to purchase so your comment about the price is unsubstantiated ,research and understand an issue properly before you make ridiculous claims
it would prevent a lot of crime against innocent people
i have nothing bad or negative to say about the scheme and anybody who does should examine the facts in fuller detail

Only if they pay for my sports car and wild women habit, and pay for my love of Chinese meals and good beer FIRST.
NO, this is a bad idea and just encourages people to do drugs, AND KEEP doing drugs, for years and years and years. One women I saw on the BBC report earlier has been a heroin addict for TWENTY FOUR years. The best thing to do with her is to take her out back and shoot her. She will be sponging off the NHS - unemployable for the rest of her miserable life because she was stupid and would not listen to her teachers when she went to school.

This has got to be one of the dumbest ideas, legalising criminality.
What next.
Ferrari’s for twocers?
Big houses for burglars.
Virgins for rapists.
Cruise control for speeders.
Free off licences for drunks.
Clearly this is an admission that the forces of law and order are conceding failure, the drug dealers, importers and users have beaten them and they have surrendered.
The genuine solution is enforcement and rehabilitation robustly applied, with the resources for detection, arrest, prosecution and imprisonment for offenders commensurate with the destruction they spawn. For victims, secure rehabilitation facilities readily available of a high standard, well equipped and staffed.
This programme sounds like a conspiracy between the authorities, drug abusers and the trafficking industry.
sherlock | Sep 16, 2009
I strongly object to the whole idea.Isn’t there an island where all the druggies can go,after all it is self inflicted.
