IMDB rating: 5.70 Plot: Glen Canyon, Arizona, the present day. Wayne, practising at night in the desert for his upcoming fireman’s exam, witnesses the impact of a meteorite. The next day, biology teacher Dr. Ira Kane and geology teacher Harry Block from Glen Canyon Community College manage to get to the meteorite, which is stuck in the ground at the bottom of a cave. By taking a sample, they discover a slimy blue fluid coming out of the meteorite. A little later, Ira Kane finds out that myriads of single-celled life-forms dwell in the fluid, evolve at an incredible rate, even while he’s watching. What first seems like a sure ticket to Sweden for the Nobel Prize soon develops into a nightmare: By evolving and adapting at that unbelievably fast rate, the Aliens start spreading out, and the Military comes in. Now it all comes down to what Darwin so rightfully stated: Survival of the fittest. And no good idea in sight… |

Regarding the theory of evolution…?
As I understand, the basic idea is that mutations that help an organism survive are more likely to survive long enough to mate, creating more similar organisms - eventually producing species that are more and more capable of surviving, specifically surviving as a species.
According to that, then, we’re nowhere near the top of the evolutionary food chain, right? Cockroaches are way higher than we are, since as a species, they’re better able to survive pretty much anything.
When I said "evolutionary food chain," that means at the top of the evolutionary ladder. And no, I don’t mean a literal ladder, the same way I didn’t mean a literal food chain.
there is no "evolutionary food chain", the temporal duration of species has nothing to do with an evolutionary "hierarchy". We are at the top of the biological food chain, and we are also,by far the most Intelligent animal on earth. Our own species has undergone great adaptations to climate and societal structure. We are just a relatively young species.

Actually you are correct, but we remain at the top because we are the smartest, unlike most animals, we can communicate, and let’s face it… THUMBS PEOPLE! This is probably the most advanced thing humans have.

So you’ll need not pray about the survival of the cockroach. They’re all set.

Say yes to good and no to bad.
God wants you to not be angry.

Things evolve in different ways. They’ve evolved to survive a nuclear holocaust (damn those nasty things) while we’ve evolved to use items as tools for survival.
edit: I really hope there’s someone who can explain it better than I can.

the food chain is different than who’s better at surviving…. and the only reason we are at the "top of the food chain" is because we aren’t continuously eaten by other animals (with a few minor tragic exceptions of course) and the reason why that is true is because we are a species that can produce tools to overcome larger animals…
the food chain describes who eats who and for the most part we are at the top with other great hunters in the animal kingdom…. however it should be a circle… because even the hunters will eventually die and their bodies will get eaten by other smaller organisms as the body decays….

No, cockroaches are at the apex of their niche, that’s why they haven’t really changed for a few million years. Same with sharks. Sharks have been around since the dinosaurs, they’re the perfect predators. Crocodiles and alligators, same way. Humans, only thing we have going for us is our intelligence, if you want to call it that.
Zero - Atheati Maverick Hunter | Nov 19, 2009
That’s not entirely true. Through adaptation, a species can change until a new species emerges with different traits and characteristics, and they don’t always change for the better. There’s lots of species that are evolutionary dead ends, who adapted themselves into a corner, and died out when the environment changed.

Wow. No offense, dude, but crack a book already.

Your ‘logic’ about evolution is a good example of how illogical and deceptive the evolutionists can be.
Evolutionists misrepresent every piece of ‘evidence’ they find, based on speculations, to fit into a pretty (imaginary) picture.
If everything was evolving… then cockroaches would have evolved.
They will tell you that ‘evolution’ takes millions of years…. but that’s NOT true. It’s based on generations, of specific species… surely out of millions of years, the cockroach would have evolved… because after all, everything is evolving all the time… yeah right!.

Pretty much, yes.
Evolution doesn’t make value judgements, such as "superior" or "inferior".
The ants that are around today are still pretty much the same ants that were around when the dinosaurs were around. Their design was very adaptable from the get-go, so why mess with a good thing?
TheKitten | Nov 19, 2009
Cockroaches may well be more successful at survival than humans. It’s not entirely clear if intelligence is such a good thing; humans can outsmart and set traps for prey, and observe and take note of the characteristics of prey, but they can also build nuclear weapons and industries that can change the climate on a global scale.

It’s less "helping the organism survive" than helping the organism adapt. The most adaptable organism is the one likely to live the longest and breed the most. Sentience allowed us to adapt to all sorts of things, which has led us to where we are today.
Natural selection, unfortunately, doesn’t seem to apply to humans anymore because we have adapted ourselves out of it. It’s up to us to control our evolution as a species now.

People are the highest form of worldly life because they were made in God’s likeness. Cockroaches are just bugs. Some people may be mutants and only God knows why this is so. We are to love them as our own and care for them as God’s children. I don’t see how a mutant is more likely to survive. Most dont and all of them need around the clock care.
Benja | Nov 19, 2009
Mutations generally leave species deformed, retarded, and less fit to survive. I do not call a single mutation that has excelled a species.
Cory B | Nov 19, 2009
You are right, in way. But terribly flawed in your perspective.
You can’t view evolution as a "ladder", where some species are higher up the ladder than others. That infers that there’s a linear scale on which you can gauge which organism is "better", but there is no such thing. Simply put, everything is different. Yes, you’re right….cockroaches are very well adapted, physiologically….but we are well adapted, in intelligence. Other animals have different strengths that suit their conditions.
And if you take just humans. Compare say, Negroids and Caucasians….each has different strengths. For example, Negroids tend to be very good runners, because their ancestors needed to use their feet to get around alot, seeing as they didn’t really have beasts of burden in Africa. Caucasians tend to be better swimmes though, as that ethnicity has been around coastal lands more throughout history.
Neither of these facts make one race better than the other though.

But they don’t eat us. Much.
The food chain is different than the proverbial evolutionary ladder.
Cockroaches haven’t changed much in millions of years because they haven’t needed to. But they’ve adapted in different ways than we have and to different environmental niches. Insects, we must remember, are far more ’successful’ than mammals. After all, they’ve been around for much, much longer.
But don’t let that get you down. They still die when nuked.
Nostromo | Nov 19, 2009
The food chain is a separate thing.
Cockroaches may be a more successful species than humans, if survival is your only measure.
Nowpower | Nov 19, 2009
there is NO evolution just an opinion of a dead man and atheist say we read fairy tale books !!??
TRUTH Speaker | Nov 19, 2009
Being at the top of the food chain has to do with who you can eat, if you want to and who can eat you, if they want to. It has little to do with the Theory of Evolution, except as part of the selection part of the process.
By the way, humans are no more or less evolved than any other thing alive, today on the planet. Everything alive is at the tip of a branch of a 3.5 billion year old tree of life. Everything alive has been evolving for the same amount of time. We are just adapted to different ecological niches.
