What would be the conflict in this story?
The real journey was beginning . . . I had not yet gazed down into the bottomless well into which I was to be plunged, but the moment had now come . . . I have said that it was about a hundred feet across, or three hundred feet round. I leaned over a projecting rock, and looked down–my hair stood on end! The horror of the void seized on me. I felt my centre of gravity moving, and vertigo mounting to my head like intoxication. There is nothing more irresistible than the attraction of the abyss. I was about to fall, but a hand restrained me; it was that of Hans. It was evident I had not taken quite enough lessons at the church in Copenhagen.

. . . (With rope "a thumb’s thickness and four hundred feet long," they descended into the hole.)

We had repeated the operation fourteen times, and each took half an hour, so that made seven hours, plus fourteen quarters of an hours for rest, i.e. ten hours and a half altogether . . .

Lying on my back, I looked up, and saw a brilliant speck at the end of the three-thousand-feet tube, which acted like an enormous telescope. It was a star. Then I fell into a deep sleep. . . .

At eight in the morning we were awakened by a glint of daylight, reflected and broken up into a rain of bright sparks by the thousands of facets of the lava walls above. It was bright enough to enable us to distinguish the surrounding objects.

"Well, Axel, what do you say to it all?" said my uncle, rubbing his hands. "Have you ever passed a more peaceful night at home? No noise of carts, or street cries, or boatmen’s shouts!"

"Certainly it is quiet enough at the bottom of this well, quiet enough to be alarming!"

"Come," said my uncle, "we have not yet penetrated one inch into the bowels of the earth!"

"What do you mean?"

"We are just about at sea-level now."

It was indeed true that the barometer mercury, which had been rising as we descended, had stopped at twenty-nine inches.

"You see," said my uncle, "we have as yet only the pressure of one atmosphere; I am longing for the time when we shall have to replace the barometer by the manometer."
