Original Version of "Around The World In 80 Days"?
I’m trying to get a copy of ‘Around The World’ in 80 days but there appears tobe a couple of versions written differently.
Does anyone have the ORIGINAL one? If so, what is the first sentence in it? I don’t want to go and buy some simplified modernised version. I want the very thing Jules Verne wrote!
Unless you’re planning on reading it in the original French, then any unabridged copy is as close as you’re going to get. There have been several translations over the years, so the difference in the opening lines is just a difference in the translation.
That being said, if you’re wanting to get a translation that is as faithful to the original as possible then you must read the Oxford’s World Classics edition. It is the most recent translation available and was translated by the pre-eminent Vernian scholar, William Butcher. It’s leaps and bounds better than any other translation available as most previous translations of Verne are quite poor indeed.

Your problem is probably that you are reading different translations. It was, after all, originally written in French.
